Flatrocks Beach, North of Wedge Island, Western Australia
One of my all time favourite beaches, as featured on the background here, is a patch of clean white sand off the beaten path on the West coast of Western Australia about 8km's North of Wedge Island.
I don't know if it has a name, we call it Flatrocks beach,
as it has a small flat rocky outcrop that marks the end of
the 4wd beach track on the coast itself. From this point
there are a myriad of inland tracks and is/was (haven't
been there for a while) several small DEC managed spots
just off the beach over the dunes, to pitch a tent for the
night. Of course there are no facilities or anything, but
nothing beats natures alarm clock and waking to the
sound of the ocean.
The water is crystal clear and the extended shelf of
shallow water extends out over several graduating depths
of breakers to meet a length of reef. Perfect for fishing
if you're into that sort of thing, we prefer boogie
boarding!
One memorable visit was shared with a young seal of some
kind surfing the waves with us for about 10 minutes.
We've seen dolphins once or twice, but thankfully none of
the more deadly varieties of marine life.
Try your hand at locating it on the Google map here. Using the 1 km scale, scroll up the coast from the tip of the coast opposite Wedge Island, until you see the rocky outcrop break the line of beach. My little piece of paradise you will have found!
